In 1997, popular search engines consisted of endless, curated lists of URLs. In 1998, Google Search launched.
We’ve come a long way since then. From two founders and one employee working out of Susan Wojcicki’s Menlo Park garage, we’ve grown to fill a large Mountain View campus we call the Googleplex. We work on products galore, like AdWords, AdSense, Android, Apps, Chrome, Google+, Maps and YouTube. And Googlers leapfrog from Mountain View to opportunities in our offices around the world, from Ann Arbor and Seattle to Amsterdam and Shanghai.
Our mission is still the same: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. We hire smart, passionate people and empower them to think big and act on opportunity from the day they come on board. Since our founding, we’ve had weekly TGIF gatherings where we can ask senior management anything we want, and the conversation can veer from a product launch to a founder’s facial hair.
The Googleplex is home to scores of buildings, each with its own personality. With hundreds of bikes and scooters at our disposal, getting around campus is easy. There’s beach volleyball, a bowling alley, a climbing wall, over 25 cafeterias, more than 100 micro-kitchens and seven fitness centers. Add in Google Doodles and April Fool’s jokes like AdSense for Conversations and Gmail Motion and all the fascinating visitors to campus (Lady Gaga, Barack Obama…), and it’s easy to feel like we’re back in college.

We get to go beyond talking about changing the world to actually doing it, working on really big problems with unparalleled technical resources. With awesome perks like free shuttle bus service from around the Bay Area (with WiFi!), on-site doctors and generous new-parent policies to Café Jia (which serves Asian food) and Café 150 (which sources all its ingredients from within 150 miles of the Googleplex), we’re also treated really, really well.
We expect a lot of ourselves, but don’t take ourselves too seriously. Our voices count, down to the newest Noogler’s. We understand that innovation is born of diversity, and hire accordingly. We get to work on a range of products and projects – even change careers completely – and travel the world for meetings or job assignments. We scale good ideas incredibly quickly. Our engineers can build a career doing hands-on engineering – they don’t have to move to management to get ahead.
The Googleplex is our corporate headquarters, so we do it all, from engineering to sales, marketing, finance, legal, corporate communications and HR. Our products include Android, Chrome, YouTube, Google+, Search, Ads and Commerce and Local. We’re also always thinking about the long term and looking for new areas for innovation (self-driving cars, anyone?).
It’s a “thank goodness it’s Friday” celebration, our version of an all-hands meeting (read: there’s beer and snacks). Because transparency has always been central to Larry and Sergey’s vision for Google, we’ve been having TGIFs since the very beginning. Back then, they felt more like campfire storytelling sessions than corporate gatherings. That’s not quite possible these days, but at their heart our TGIFs remain the same, bringing together Googlers from across the company every week and giving them a chance to share what they’re up to – and to ask our founders anything they want. And we do mean anything.
So many that it’d take pages and pages to name them all. Our founders, CEO Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are both based here. There’s Peter Norvig, who co-wrote Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach. Our Googlers include creators of programming languages like C, Java, Python, Unix and VIM. Andy Rubin’s pretty famous for his Android work.

Through GoogleServe, our Googlers volunteer at the Exploratorium, participate in beach cleanups and help out at local schools. We work with thousands of nonprofits, helping them spread their message and raise money using Google products. Our 2011 grants in STEM and girls’ education, empowerment through technology and anti-slavery and human trafficking totaled $40 million. Google for Veterans and Families brings together Google products and platforms for service members and their families. We invest heavily in clean-energy businesses and initiatives. And we hold all kinds of events to support the developer community. Google I/O is our signature event; in 2012, it sold out in just over 20 minutes.
