No. 722,487 7 2 Claims (Cl. 132-39) The present invention generally relates to a set of tools for use bybeau-ticians and includes a tubular member open at both ends and a comb-like member for insertion longitudinally through the tubular member for pulling hair through the tubular member and also for blocking the hair, that is separating it into block-like areas.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide beauticians tools which are adapted for blocking the hair of a persons head that is to receive a treatment of some type and pulling the blocks of hair through a tubular member and securing the hair in such a manner that the roots of the hair will be exposed for application of the material to the hair. Such material may be a coloring agent or a bleaching agent where it is only necessary or desirable to touch-up the roots of the hair rather than apply the material to all of the hair.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a comb and curl set which is useful in blocking the hair for the purpose of rolling it onto curlers used in permanent waving of either the coldwave type of machineless permanent type and the hook end of the comb may be used for pulling the hair through the felt pads normally used in the machineless permanents. In fact, the comb and the curler tubes may be employed for many purposes in waving hair.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide a hair curl set including tubular members and a comb which are preferably constructed of a plastic material and are extremely inexpensive to manufacture.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates a curler tube while the numeral 12 generally designates a comb both of which make a curl set and both of which may be constructed of plastic material. The comb device 12 may be any desired length although 6" in length has been found to be successful. One end of the elongated shank 14 is provided with a hooked end 16 while the other end is provided with a plurality of laterally disposed serrations or teeth 18.

Each tubular curler includes a cylindrical member 20 e 2 of plastic or the like which has a series of v shaped notches 22 in the lower or inner end thereof with a zigzag slit 24 extending inwardly from the other end thereof and terminating in a circular opening 26 to prevent longie tudinal tearing of the cylindrical member 20 which is constructed of a plastic material which is flexible and resistant to coloring agents, bleach or hair waving solutions of various types. A plurality of the tubular curlers" 10 are provided in a set while there is a single comb-pro vided and the comb 12 is usedfor blocking'oif the'hair into areas generally designated by numeral 28 and which may be about 1" square. As shown in Figure 2, the blocked off area 28 is formed by using the teeth 18 and the hair 30 is parted by the teeth 18. The comb 12 is then reversed and the hooked end 16 inserted through one of the tubular members 10 and engaged with the hair 30 and pulled upwardly through the cylindrical member 20 substantially as illustrated in Figure l. The hair 30 is then pulled downwardly into the zigzag slit 24 and if the hair is sufficiently long, it is wrapped around the outside of the cylindrical member 20 as shown in Figure 3 and secured in wrapped position on the exterior surface of the cylindrical member 20 by a hairpin or bobby pin 32.

The tubular device defined by the cylindrical member 20 elevates the hair so that it is secured away from the head to avoid application of bleaching or coloring agents to any part of the hair except to the roots of the hair. The combing tool 12 is to block the hair as illustrated in Figure 2 and then to pull it through the tube as indicated in Figure 1 so it can be fastened at the upper end of the tube in the zigzag cut slit. The hair is then left free as it is or wrapped around the outside of the tube and secured with a clip 32. With the use of these two items, the hair coloring or bleaching agent can be applied to the roots of the hair in an even and uniform manner in a more effective and rapid manner than by the old method of parting the hair and applying along the part. By the use of these items, the retouching application can be observed constantly. This will prevent over application of the color or bleaching agents and also allow the rinsing of the agents from the roots of the hair without causing overlapping of the agents to the portion of the hair which has previously been treated. While the device has been specifically described in conjunction with coloring or bleaching, it is pointed out that the comb may be used in blocking hair for purposes of rolling it on the curlers used in permanent waving of the cold type or of the machineless permanent type since the hair must also be blocked oif into portions of a size to use in these two types of permanent waving. The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerousmodifications and changes will readily oceur to these skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows;

1. In an apparatus for use in treating hair, an Openended tubular member adapted to be positioned substantially perpendicularly with one end thereof disposed ad- Patented Nov. 29, 196i! jacent the scalp, said one end portion of said member being provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced notches adapted to receive tufts of a strand of hair passed longitudinally through the tubular member, the other end portion of the member being provided with an open slit extending longitudinally inwardly from the other end to a point spaced longitudinally from said notches whereby a portion of the member between the notches and the slit is imperforate, said slit being adapted for anchoring a hair strand wound externally around the slit end portion of said member.

2. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said slit is of a zigzag configuration.
