Geum coccineum / Avens

Geum coccineum
'Cooky'

June 5, 2014

I have several of these little clumpers planted in the blueberry garden strip, but the large mass of them diminishes each year and only a few are left.

Geums like some shade in the hottest part of summer,, so they may be in too much hot sun.

Geums bloom in the very earliest part of spring, in April when the garden is just waking up, and they stay in bloom for a long time, throughout all of May.

Their orange is a nice alternative to the pastels and pinks of early spring. There is some nice fall color in the foliage in autumn.

In 2013 the clumps were quite substantial and made a big bright orange mound under the viburnum.

But each year there have been fewer and fewer. Both the blue forget me nots seen here and the stand of orange geums are mostly gone now.
