Trifolium repens / Clover

April 16, 2010
Trifolium repens
'Dragon's Blood'

This is white clover, but it is a beautifully variegated clover, with red streaks on the clean green foliage.  It has the typical white pom poms of flowers, which the bees love.

I planted this in several different spots and it never thrived.  I finally dug it up and put in pots for summer ‘09 where the few remaining plants did expand.

Then I replanted what remained in a shady, moist area under and behind fothergillas along the West Walk.  Finally, it is starting to spread there, mixing with the sedum 'Angelina'.  The clear blue-green clover is a nice contrast with the golden sedum, low to the ground.

This patch is losing some of the more striking red streaks.  If it periodically loses some of the coloration, it can be cut back dramatically to near the center of its wide spread, and it will color up again.

As of 2012, it is still there, but not spreading or doing much.

The patches of clover are still there, but not very noticeable in 2013. I got another, darker red variety and put it in a red pot in 2013. Even common clover looks good this way!

This isn't really succeeding, and by 2014 I was no longer growing ornamental red leaved clover in a pot or otherwise. Ex-Plant.
