instruction and advice required for proper height/z-depth map creation

Hey G’day people,

I have found a few tutorials on z-depth but they seem to be more a pass over falling in the category “you can also create a z-depth by doing x”

I have made many attempts to take a detailed 3d model and tried to obtain a depth map to produce a Bas Relief for CnC machining and fail every time.

The detail is lost, now I understand that you can not retain all detail, but facial features eyes nose hair should be detailed enough and tall enough for cnc’ing.

Is there a definitive tutorial on producing quality depth/z-depth maps? or if someone could do a little hand holding and direct on how to make one.

Have a look at the pic - that is a brilliant z-depth map, found it on the web. You can produce a great stl with that perfect with a little smoothing for CnC use.

I can not for the life of me come anywhere close to producing this quality hight/z-depth map. if it is at all possible to do?

All the ones I produce seem to be very flat, detail lost (even though the detail is there) and the depth is always very shallow.
