Taxonomical position.

Family Poaceae Benth. Genera Festuca L.

Morphology and biology.

Long-term cereal. The plant is dense, green, not covered with a grey wax; stalks of height (10) 20-30 (40) cm. Vaginas are forcipate almost to the base. Leaves are capilliform, 0.25-0.4 mm in diameter, outside furrowed, sometimes slightly rough, quite often long and drooping. Panicle is 2-6 (9) cm long. Spikelets are fine, 4.5-5.5 mm long; the bottom floral scales are 2.5-3.5 mm long with awn that is 1-2 mm long. Blossoms in May-June. Anemofilous. 2n=14 (28).

Distribution.

Occurs throughout steppe areas of the European part of the former USSR, Western Siberia, Northern Kazakhstan, the north of Central Asia, Central Europe, and the Balkan Peninsula.

Ecology.

It grows in steppes in various types of soil. In poor soil and with anthropogenous digression of pastures, it becomes a prevailing species.

Use and economic value.

It is used as a fodder and ornamental plant.
