Salix purpurea

Also known as basket willow, this is a favorite amongst weavers. Although non-native, it has been historically used for erosion control along rivers and streams and is now considered to be naturalized. This shrubby willow has slender, purple-like twigs and will spread into thickets once established. Its dense, shrubby growth can provide shelter for birds and small mammals. Larval host for the Mourning Cloak and Viceroy.

Zone: 4-8 (Map)
Habitat: Moist, well-drained soil. Can thrive in flooded, poor, sandy soil. Full sun.
Growth: 5 ft wide, 5 ft tall at maturity.
