Chakouian And Labady Both Record Three Wins At National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Skylah Chakouian '25 and Tayana Labady '25 both advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket for the Elmira College women's wrestling program on Friday at the 2023 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships. Chakouian and Labady would both fall just one win short of advancing to the second day and becoming one of the final eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes for the Soaring Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Chakouian opened her tournament for the Purple & Gold at 155 pounds with a pin against Nina Sandoval from Minot State at the 5:24 mark of the bout. Advancing to the round of 16, Chakouian would battle a familiar foe in Tiffani Baublitz from King University. Baublitz would come away victorious with a 10-4 decision to put Chakouian into the consolation bracket.

Chakouian battled for a pair of 10-0 tech fall victories in the consolation bracket against teammate Hazel Dahlquist '25 and Andreia Langley from Emory & Henry. Needing just one more victory to become one of the final eight wrestlers remaining at 155 pounds, Chakouian would be pinned at the 1:36 mark by Tiera Jimerson from North Central to bring her tournament run to an end.
 
Labady would take the same path as Chakouian with an opening-round victory wrestling at 191 pounds as she would notch a 10-0 tech fall over Cristina Santoyo from Emmanuel. A pin by North Central's Traeh Haynes at the 1:24 mark would put Labady into the consolation bracket where she would face Trinity Monaghan from Lock Haven.
 
Labady notched a 6-5 decision to advance to the consolation third round where she would record a 12-0 tech fall victory over Yamilex Perez from Adrian. Just one victory away from advancing to the consolation semifinals, Labady would drop a 10-0 tech fall decision against Jayleen Sekona from Colorado Mesa to bring her tournament to a close for Elmira.
 
Skylynn Tomlinson '26 opened her first trip to the national tournament for the Soaring Eagles with a first-round fall at 101 pounds over Bentley Hills from Carthage in a time of 1:30. In her round of 16 bout, Tomlinson would drop a 10-0 tech fall decision against Jessica Corredor from King. She would be matched up against Haley Zinninger from Emmanuel in the consolation second round as Zinninger recorded an 8-3 victory to hand Tomlinson her second loss of the day.
 
Gabby Bradigan '26 brought plenty of intensity competing at 136 pounds for Elmira and delivered a 21-9 tech fall victory over Brooke Zejada from Texas Women's University to advance to the round of 16. Bradigan dropped a 10-0 tech fall decision in the second round before rebounding with a 6-5 victory over Shawna Oesterling from Adrian. She would have her tournament brought to an end in the consolation third round against Lana Perez from Gannon as Perez pinned Bradigan at the 1:08 mark.
 
Dahlquist dropped an opening-round bout via a tech fall against Amalani Latu from Limestone before receiving a bye into the second round of the consolation bracket at 155 pounds. Dahlquist would be matched up against her teammate Skylah Chakouian in the bout as Chakouian notched a 10-0 tech fall victory.
 
Mariyah Casados '26 opened her first trip to nationals with a victory competing at 170 pounds for Elmira as a pin over Alyssa Arana from Emmanuel vaulted her into the championship second round. A tough draw would match Casados against Emily Cue from Simon Fraser as Cue notched a 10-0 tech fall to drop Casados into the consolation bracket. Casados delivered her second pin of the tournament over Sierra Pienkowski from Carthage to advance to the third round where she would face Journey Land from Limestone. Land would grind out an 11-5 decision in the third round to end the tournament run for Casados.
