Perennial up to 50 cm tall, erect or ascending; Leaf-blade up to 15 cm long, up to 8 mm broad, upper sheaths slightly inflated; panicle compact up to 5 cm long, 7-12 mm broad, usually tinged with purple, ovoid; glumes truncate, with scarious margin, keel fringed, terminating in 1-3 mm long awn; lemma 2/3 as long as glumes, 3-5-nerved.
Photographed from meadows in Gulmarg and Apharwat in July Nice Catch Sir, it looks similar to Phalaris minor a noxious weed in wheat field in our area Yes … That is a taller annual plant with longer and thicker inflorescence, green in colour. This one is perennial, with bluish green inflrescence with reddish tinge and smaller size. In fact another species Phleum himalaicum looks more similar to Phalaris minor.

Photographed from meadows in Gulmarg and Apharwat in July . VoF Week :: TG :: Phleum alpinum: Phleum alpinum is a perennial grass and the inflorescence is ovoid. This grass found in VoF seems to be an annual and the inflorescence is several times longer than broad. Phleum alpinum is also found in the valley, but this one seems to be different. I had also collected this from VoF in 2000 and had placed it under Phleum himalaicum, though the description of P.himalaicum in different books do not completely match, especially w.r.t. length of awns.
Both seems to be Phleum alpinum. The difference could be mainly because of grazing impact and also of course season, altitude, soil depth, etc. Thanks … My Phleum alpinum was collected from altitude of 3300 m, whereas my P. himalaicum from 1700-1900 m. I wonder if P. alpinum can grow at such low altitudes, plus this was clearly an annual plant. . |
