Scabiosa atropurpurea

Buds are nearly black and petals turn a deep burgundy as they open. The white stamen contrast against the center looking much like needles in a pincushion. The flowers are on tall, wiry stems blooming summer through fall, attracting pollinators and adding color to your garden. Flowers will develop into seed heads that have an interesting texture. The colored buds, flowers, and seed heads can all be used in your floral arrangements.

Early-Season Seeding: Starting seed inside is recommended since plants struggle with direct seeding. Start seeds 4-6 weeks before your last frost and transplant after the danger of frost has passed. Direct seed after the danger of frost has passed in zones 3-7.

Late-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors 16 weeks before your first fall frost date in zones 3-9.

Growing Tips: Removing spent flowers will encourage more blooming but the seed heads are also attractive when left. Scabiosa is susceptible to powdery mildew and requires a foot of space to provide enough air flow between plants. Trellis may be required for support if using stems as a cut flower.

Cut Flower: Harvest when buds have changed color, are half open, or when the seed head has turned light-green. Stems will last 7-10 days in a vase if given preservative.
