Prairie Fire Sedge creates a fiery display of color when planted in ground covering sweeps. Its upright, slender, green-bronze foliage is tipped with orange highlights. In full sun this deep orange coloring intensifies, creating a dramatic look that blends well with hot-colored perennials and yellow-green shrubs. Coloring persists through most of the winter in warmer climates. This New Zealand native does best in moist, well-drained soil, but will adapt to drier conditions once established. Previously listed as hardy to Zone 5, we’ve pulled it back to Zone 6 based on feedback from customers. Its size and upright habit make a great focal point in mixed containers. Part of the ColorGrass® series, ‘Prairie Fire’ is a seed selection of Carex testacea.

GROWER INFO & TIPS
- Growth rate: medium
- Grow in 1 or 2 gallon
- Grow in well-drained soil
- Water needs: keep evenly moist, but on the dry side
- Fertilizing: use a slow-realease, medium-rate fertilizer
- Possible pests: Bactra venosana caterpillar (this plant is generally pest free)
- Overwintering: cold frame with clear poly; do not overwater in winter
- If cutting back this plant, do so early in the growing season to allow time for new growth to mature
