  • Deciduous shrub, 2-4 ft (0.6-1.2 m) tall, similar width, rounded, branches prostrate to ascending.  Twigs slightly resinous with minuute warty glands.  Leaves small, nearly circular, 5-15 mm long, coarse rounded teeth, glossy, the base is straight or notched.
  • Part shade.  Moist and swampy sites in cool areas, but tolerates dry sites and is used in rock gardens.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 2    Native to northern latitudes of Europe and North America.  Similar to Betula grandulosa which has a slightly larger leaf and a blade longer than broad and a base that is wedge-shaped.
