Pronunciation:
BET-u-la PEN-dew-la
Family:
Betulaceae
Genus:
Type:
Broadleaf
Native to (or naturalized in) Oregon:
No
  • Deciduous tree, deeply cut leaf.  Tends to defoliate in fall before species (see Betula pendula).
  • Jacobson (1996) writes that B. pendula 'Laciniata' is rare in cultivation, and that most trees called 'Laciniata' are actually B. pendula 'Crispa' (sometimes given as B. pendula var. crispa).   However, Cutleaf Birch is often sold as B. pendula 'Dalecarlica', which Jacobson says is extremely rare, and wrongly applied to 'Crispa'.  Additional information on this issue can be seen on the Betula pendula page of the International Dendrology Society website, Betula pendula - Trees and Shrubs Online
