Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Cake

I love the Winnie the Pooh stories and movies with all my heart.  These characters make me think of my childhood and they revive in me a sense of carefree joy and wonder.  I love this cake for its sheer simplicity.  However, I don’t want to undersell the amount of work that went into hand sculpting both characters.

The cake was made using two 8 inch rounds cut, filled, and stacked.  The cake without the characters stood approximately 4-5 inches tall and is covered in Satin Ice Fondant that has been hand dyed using the color “sky blue.”  The bee hives were hand cut and the lines were made using a wooden sculpting tool.  The bees were all hand sculpted out of fondant and the wings were attached using vodka.  The stripes on the bees bodies were hand painted using black  food color gel that had been thinned down using vodka.  The bees were mounted on wire and then they were placed into the cake.  Winnie the Pooh and Tigger were each hand sculpted using fondant.  Tigger’s whiskers were made using gum paste and fondant mixed together.  They were allowed to harden before being pushed into Tigger’s face.  Tigger’s stripes were also hand painted using black gel and vodka.  The honey pots were hand formed by indenting the the fondant with a finger and working it around until the center thinned out.  The pots were then filled with yellow fondant to look like honey.
