The scientific name given to annual bluegrass, a low-growing and cool-season grass which dies in early summer as the soil top layer begins to dry. Poa annua is distinguished from other grasses by its typical leaf tip shaped like a boatâs bow. Annual bluegrass is considered a winter-annual grassy weed that produces numerous seeds spread easily by birds and man. Poa annua is a difficult-to-control grassy weed that requires specialized products and properly-timed applications. Depending on the turf species, the only choice for control may be the use of non-selective weed control products.
If watering a kentucky bluegrass lawn in the summer is too expensive or time consuming, consider letting the lawn go dormant. as long as it has been established for a few years, and as long as you irrigate the lawn with 1" of water every 2 to 3 weeks, your lawn should green up again in the fall when temperatures are cool enough.
Use a fertilizer formulated specifically for your plant. Avoid over-fertilizing and follow the instruction on the label.
Most often planting instructions will suggest planting in loam soil. Loam soil should be rich in minerals and nutrients for the plants and loose enough that roots and spread out and grow strong.
Make judicious cuts to encourage new growth. Cut just before a leaf node. Or when cutting back larger stems, cut as close to the main stem as possible.
It also thrives during cool weather, when most lawn grasses are dying back, which means that it invades the lawn at these susceptible times.
