Papaver hybridum is an annual in the Papaveraceae family. Its native range is the Canary Islands, Mediterranean Central Asia, and Pakistan. The familiar name is Black Swan. This poppy will need staking for the enormous blooms they produce. They grow to around 3-4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Papaver hybridum, commonly known as the round-leaved poppy or long-headed poppy, is a charming annual plant celebrated for its wild and natural beauty. The double blooms are 4-5 inches in diameter with fringed dark purple petals. The center is yellow, giving this poppy a real spooky look. The round, deeply lobed leaves give the plant its name, 'Black Swan.' Papaver hybridum is a prolific self-seeder and tends to thrive in disturbed soils, making it a common sight along roadsides and in meadows. This wildflower flourishes in full sun and well-drained soils, and it provides essential nectar for pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Its effortless and unpretentious nature makes it a welcome addition to wildflower gardens and naturalized landscapes, contributing to a lovely and relaxed ambiance.  A must-have for the poppy lover and is also uniquely different. It prefers to grow in rich soil with average water needs in full sun. Birds, bees, and butterflies will visit this flower. Annual

Germination

Papaver hybridum, commonly known as hybrid poppy, requires a well-draining soil mix and a sunny location. For seed germination, sow the seeds directly on the surface of moist soil, then lightly cover them with a thin layer of fine soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. The optimal germination temperature is around 15-20°C (59-68°F). Germination should occur within 7-14 days. Once seedlings emerge, provide adequate sunlight and water. Thin out overcrowded seedlings to promote healthy growth. Mature hybrid poppies will produce beautiful, colorful blooms.
