Malus floribunda

characteristics: The yellow or red fruit are not considered edible.
uses: This is an excellent pollinator for other apple varieties, producing large amounts of viable pollen for a one week period from Day 3 through to Day 10.
origins: In eastern Asia and Japan, possibly a cross between Malus sieboldii and Malus baccata.
cultivation: Vigorous. Upright spreading, tree with domed crown, up to 5 metres tall. Tolerant to hardiness zone 4
vulnerabilities: Resistance to scab, powdery mildew and fire blight.
notes: Widely used in breeding programmes to provide the Vf gene for resistance to apple scab.
ploidism: Diploid.
flowers: Bright red buds opening to single, white to light pink, medium to large blossoms. Long bloom period. Group B
fruit: Very small, yellow flushed red, sometimes brownish red.
