Haworthia maughanii 'Amaterasu/天照' is a stunning cultivar of the Haworthia maughanii species, a member of the Asphodelaceae family. This particular cultivar is highly regarded and sought after among succulent enthusiasts for its striking appearance and unique traits.

'Amaterasu' exhibits a rosette-like growth pattern composed of tightly arranged, triangular leaves. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and often display translucent "windows" or areas near the tips, allowing sunlight to penetrate and aid in photosynthesis. The leaves are typically a vibrant green, sometimes with subtle patterns or markings.

This cultivar tends to remain relatively small and compact, usually reaching a size of around 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) in diameter.

One of the distinguishing features of 'Amaterasu' is the presence of attractive and intricate leaf patterns or variegations. These patterns can manifest as bands, spots, or lines of different colors, such as white, cream, or reddish-brown, enhancing the visual appeal of the plant.

The name 'Amaterasu' is derived from the Japanese Shinto deity of the sun, reflecting the plant's stunning appearance and possibly the light-transmitting "windows" in its leaves, which resemble the rays of the sun.

Like other Haworthia, 'Amaterasu' thrives in bright but indirect light. It does well when placed in partial shade or locations with filtered sunlight. These succulents prefer well-draining soil and are often grown in containers or pots. Care should be taken not to over water, as they are susceptible to root rot. Watering should be done when the soil is dry, especially during the active growing season.

'Amaterasu' can be propagated through offsets, which are small offsets or pups that develop around the base of the mother plant. These can be carefully separated and replanted in suitable succulent soil mixtures.

Haworthia maughanii 'Amaterasu' is prized for its vibrant appearance, compact growth habit, and the exquisite leaf variegations that set it apart from other Haworthia cultivars. It's a coveted addition to any succulent collection.
