The Oxapampa Ash‡ninka Yaneshas (RBOAY) Biosphere Reserve is threatened by deforestation due to agrigulture, coca cultivation, timber, and cattle grazing. The Oxapampa Ash‡ninka Yaneshas (RBOAY) Biosphere Reserve is threatened by deforestation due to agrigulture, coca cultivation, timber, and cattle grazing. This negatively impacts the ecosystem, the capacity of the water systems, and rural populations. The project seeks to contribute to the improvement and maintenance of the water flows and quality of the Pichis, Huancabamba, and Chorobamba sub-basins, located within the Pachitea River basin, by establishing water funds through the Reciprocal Water Arrangements or ARA (Acuerdos Rec’procos por el Agua) schemes. The Oxapampa Provincial Municipality administers a grant funded by those who rely on the water from the Reserve. The grant compensates landowners for committing to forest conservation in the water supplying areas. By the end of the project in 2016, 49 ARAs had been established, covering 1,000 ha in Chorobamba, 420 ha in Pichis and 100 ha in Huancabamba.
