I was using a different IDE > SATA converter at first, but DMA issues caused the system to become extremely unresponsive while doing disk I/O.

Per some suggestions on various forums, they mentioned it was most likely the adapter and to get this StarTech adapter instead. And you know what? This one worked perfectly! Super fast DMA disk access now on my Win98 retro gaming rig!

Yes, this adapter costs a bit more than the no-name ones, but it is worth it if you want something with better compatibility with retro systems.

I wanted to upgrade my old Windows XP computer from the IDE hard-drive to a modern SATA SSD and this little device is perfect for the job. I know that XP does not support the trim function for SSDs but I have installed them in several XP computers and they all work fine. I also had problems trying to replace the IDE DVD drive with used ones and after three tries I decided I would buy a new SATA DVD drive and use this adapter and it works great.

Worked perfectly when I replaced a 2009 vintage 500gb IDE drive with a 1TB SATA drive in our Toshiba Rs-TX20 TIVO.
    Build quality is good.
The IDE pins can be bent IF you do not remove the IDE cable evenly from the connector, however I have found this to be true for this style of connector since 1987!
I ran into a few compatibility issues when connecting the adapter to the computer I use for cloning hard drives.
The computer is based on an older ASUS P5KC motherboard which has built in SATA and JMicron chipset IDE ports.
BIOS refused to recognize any SATA hard drive I connected to the JMicron ports using this adapter.
BIOS DID recognize the drive when the IDE cable was plugged in an Adaptec ATA66 PCI adapter card.
Didn't matter if I used a 40 or 80 wire ribbon cable, the 80 has 40 signal lines and 40 grounds to support faster speeds.
So bottom line.. It works for my needs but may or may not work for you depending on what you are plugging it into.

No issues following the directions of some modding YouTubers.

Keep in mind that the PATA side feels very fragile so be careful with maneuvering it within the Xbox and don’t put pressure directly on it.
