In his conceptual projects German photographer and media art professor Jurgen Klauke combines photographic art with body art and performance. In his photo series (more often they are self portraits) he looks into the gender roles in the societal and social structures, explores understanding of masculinity and femininity, and also is in a search of a definition of beauty. 

Documentation and performance are closely connected in all of his projects. Due to this approach it is easy to observe the process of development of the whole series. Playing with an image, Klauke creates images between masculinity and femininity; he mixes up attributes of both genders to show the conditions flowing into each other. To achieve this he uses make up, costumes, props and prosthetics imitating genitals. The prosthetics themselves are not always anatomically correct or located in the “right” place. Sometimes they are even attached directly to the body, sometimes to clothes. Ambiguousness of the body here is the sign of the median corporeality, where the body, gender, artistic “I” is determined by the photographic means. Therefore, the gender identity that can lead to stereotypes, can be separated from the body within the framework of photography, and in some cases, completely separated. 

Combining various lighting, the change of focus and using such photographic methods as long and double exposures, Klauke creates the illusion of merging of his body with the prosthetics that are not his. In this case, the peculiarities of the female body organisation one can refer to the male body of Jurgen Klauke; he intensifies this effect using costumes and make up. Artist shows the world and conditions through the prism of his  perception, where he uses his body as the work material. In these photo series we see the process of the ideas development, their change, and the final shoot is the result of the research. Especially in his early works Klauke is researching the issue of the gender differentiation, sexuality and the identification of beauty. 

Conceptualist photographer gives viewers the opportunity to imagine the alternative understanding of a theme, he illustrates gender diversity and fluidity. 

In one of his interviews, Jurgen Klauke says that he is cultivating the androgynous image in his everyday life as well: “My body is a surface that many of the personalities and gender roles are being projected, and are transferred to the level of art”.

Viewer resists Klauke’s provocation: you can see on the photos the artist’s personality who is playing again and again with various combinations of gender, creating something new as a result. Therefore, Klauke criticises the division of the gender roles, shows that the division between genders does not make sense, because each person has aspects of both genders inside. He does not deny his masculinity, and illustrates in his works fluidity and possibility of broadening from one gender to another.
