Wheelie on a 15lb road bike?
I don't think anyone would, but is it possible to ride a wheelie on a superlite road bike? That would be hilarious.

Robbie McEwen did it last year or a couple years back in the tour de france if I am not mistaken. Obviously not going for the win that stage, but I am pretty sure it was him since he has a BMX biking or mountain biking background. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this...

I thought I saw somewhere that Floyd Landis is particulary good at this... can ride one for something like half a mile. Spend eight hours a day on a bike, learn amazing bike handling skills. Go figure.

It's a lot easier on a bike like that if you don't have to pay for any damage out of your pocket. I would even worry about just coming back down hard.

You can wheelie a 13# Orbea up a 12% grade while you wait for your buddies to catch up.
You can also loop the Orbea out and land, still clipped in, on your seat (both the flesh one and the carbon fiber one) because you were too lazy to wrap a hand around the brake.

quite easy on a road bike if you come from MTB and BMX background. I was actually wheeling my trackbike this summer for about 1/2 a block. It's just finding that sweet spot is all.
i think that might be floyd.

damn... I guess the grade made it easier to get the wheel up but if I tried that I would probably land square on my ass... I usually find that I am too stretched to pull off a wheelie...

I have met Robbie Mcewan in person, he is a gentleman and a legend. He was a champion BMX rider before he took up road cycling so this could explain why he likes the wheel stand so much I have all the tours on tape for the past 10 years and I am sure Robbie has been doing this since around 1998, never seen Landis do it until the above pics, pretty cool!!
Speaking of Robbie, in person I have never seen so much muscle and sinew packed so tightly together in such a small package. Robbie must sit around 5% or less body fat all year around. I have a friend who is a competition body bulider and he only shows the definition that Robbie does a week or 2 before his comps.

Gradual load-shifts like wheelies don't tax a bike that much. Even the front-wheel coming down isn't that bad because your weight is not on it. So maybe 100-150lbs load max. What really loads up the wheels and frames is hitting bumps and dips in the road. Drainage ditches that drop from under you and slams you into their rising side can load the wheels with 400-500lbs of force each. Same thing with running over bikes and riders that's fallen in front of your...

Back when I used to race Mtn. Bikes (Early to mid 90's) we had a 16 year old kid on our team who started doing crits for training. He would ride wheelies around the course during warm up. Not so sure the competition thought it was cute.

Remember the USPS TV commercials last year? Wasn't that Floyd riding a wheel across the intersection in one shot? I loved those commercials. Some pretty good stunts on road bikes.
