Growth rate: Moderate, herbaceous clump-forming, spreading perennial.
Upright, bright green, sword-shaped leaves with deep red veins, inconspicuous spikes of greenish flowers bloom in early-midsummer. Preference for damp ground makes Rumex sanguineus perfect around ponds and water gardens, particularly in marshy boggy edges. Self-seeding and may be invasive.
Easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Clumps may be divided every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
