Cat Thyme
Teucrium marum
Mint family (Lamiaceae)
A herb with a scent
Teucrium marum originates from around the western Mediterranean. The plant requires a mild climate and is not hardy. It is an evergreen shrub of up to 30 cm in height. The grey-green, oval leaves resemble those of thyme. From July to September this herb flowers with crimson, aromatic fragrant flowers.
The plant itself has a slightly musty smell that cats love: the Germans call it ‘Katzengamander’ and French call it ‘Herbe aux chats’, which like the English name refers to its appeal to cats.
As with many of the Mediterranean labiates the flowers give off a pleasant aroma on release of volatile oils. In the distant past Teucrium marum was already being used in the most fashionable perfumes.
Cat thyme is one of the medicinal herbs that is now being subject to scientific research.
