Why this petition matters

Started by Pamela Davies

This petition calls for an immediate ban on the breeding and selling of Lemon Frost geckos.

Lemon Frost geckos were discovered in 2012. Their bright colour makes them attractive (and profitable) although they suffer with iridophoroma, a cancer which results in tumours which appear when they reach around one year of age and significantly shortens their lifespan.

Despite knowing the risks, and with increasing bans being introduced at reptile conventions, Lemon Frost geckos continue to be bred and sold. Nobody should profit from the production and sale of creatures that will inevitably suffer for the duration of their short lives, all for the sake of creating a particular colouring. Since very little is known about iridophoroma, the current recommended treatment is that tumours are removed, which is often successful but does not prevent further tumours developing elsewhere in the body. This leads to a lifetime of intensive surgeries which are not able to manage the condition.

More information about this disease is available at: (PDF) Iridophoroma associated with the Lemon Frost colour morph of the leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) (researchgate.net)
