Corylus colurna

Corylus colurna

Turkish hazel

Description

Corylus colurna (Turkish hazel) is a large, deciduous tree with a broad ovate crown like a Tilia. Reaching to twenty to twenty five metres high with a width of ten to twelve metres on a single stem, and can become a characteristic multistem as well. Older trees get a more open and wider canopy. Naturally occurs in Eastern-Europe, Balkans, Asia Minor and Central-Asia and grows mostly in poor, dry, rocky woodlands together with Carpinus orientalis, Ostrya carpinifolia and Tilia tomentosa. Described by the Swedish botanist Carl Linneus in 1753.

The green and waxy leaves of Corylus colurna are obovate, with crenate serration on the margins, while the underside is covered with soft hairs and paler in colour. The leaves can turn beautiful butter yellow during autumn, eventually carpeting underneath the tree. The yellow male catkins are opening in late winter, which is such a welcome sight after the dark days of winter. The female flowers are small and insignificant, developing 4-6 nuts in a husk with long scales. The ornamental flaking, pale brown bark of the Turkish hazel is corky with some shallow fissures. The canopy is dense, providing habitat for wildlife, and of course also food for birds and squirrels during the autumn and pollen and nectar for insects.

The Turkish hazel is a valuable tree, suitable for hot and dry conditions in larger gardens and parks, and also used as a street tree. The street should be wide enough for the ultimate size of the crown however. It is enjoying lots of summer heat and being able to withstand very harsh conditions. It could take severe pruning and responding vigorously even from the base with long suckers, however the wood is brittle. The leaves are soft and easy to decompose. The wood is relatively soft, however the tree can reach a very mature age. Corylus colurna requires well-draining soils where waterlogging is not an issue.
