4-inch rooted plant.

Long lived perennial and carefree. It makes an 18" x 18" nicely formed clump of gorgeous sword-shaped leaves highlighted by beautiful red veining. Cut off any (boring) flower stalks so more energy goes into foliage and cut back to the ground for fresh new growth. Can also be grown as an aquatic!

New leaves can be eaten like spinach and often used in salads or other foods where spinach might otherwise be used. I don't use the large leaves alone as they can be quite bitter. I throw a couple large leaves in my smoothies sometimes with other fruits and other veggies.

I grow mine as borders in my landscape. Ideal growing conditions are full sun with loose rich soil. I have found them to grow fine in partial shade next to my backyard fence.
