Tatarian maple, Acer tataricum, is native to central and southeastern Europe, and parts of Asia and Russia. A large shrub or small tree, it’s known for its red-green samaras (winged seed cases), which contrast beautifully with its fresh green foliage.
Acer tataricum 'Hot Wings' is a particularly ornamental variety, bearing masses of deep, scarlet red samaras, which adorn the tree like summer blooms. In spring, clusters of pale yellow flowers cover the tree just after it comes into leaf, and in autumn its foliage turns glowing shades of orange, red and yellow. Growing to an eventual height of just 5m, it packs quite a punch in a small space and is perfect for a small garden.
Grow Acer tataricum 'Hot Wings' in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered site in full sun to partial shade. Mulch annually with leaf mould. There should be little or no need to prune.
