Limonium sinuatum or Statice is a clump forming, tall stemmed, evergreen, perennial with large, oblong ruffled leaves. Though it is generally treated as an annual by most gardeners today.
There are now are large numbers of cultivars and the panicles of papery flowers are available from original purples and mauves through to bright pinks, whites and even yellow and orange.
The flowers are a great addition to garden borders as they bloom for a long period through spring and summer.
Statice makes an excellent cut and dried flower but are best kept out of direct sunlight in order to maintain their depth of colour.
They can withstand direct sea spray and drought conditions as well and are therefore an excellent choice for sandy coastal plantings - especially holiday homes where maintenance may be sporadic.
