Oddly enough, this Hawaiian-native sundew is actually a variety of Drosera anglica found in the Pacific Northwest. Botanists believe that seeds made it to Hawaii on feathers of migrating birds. The rugged mountains of Kauai are the only place in the Hawaiian islands where you can find these sundews. Being one of the wettest places on earth, it's no wonder they colonized there!

Its mainland counterpart is commonly called English sundew. The Hawaiians called their sundew Mikinalo, which means suck fly! The Hawaiian variety is a true tropical plant and doesn't undergo winter dormancy like its mainland counterpart.

This particular variety comes from the Kanaele bog owned by the Nature Conservancy. Many years ago, a fellow carnivorous plant enthusiast received permission from the Nature Conservancy to collect sundew seeds from the bog. All of our plants in our collection are progeny from mother plants that we grew from these seeds. The Nature Conservancy has since closed access to the bog, so it may be many years before anyone else obtains permission to visit the bog.

Overall, this variety of sundew is small, rarely growing more than inches tall when fully grown.
