FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Saxifraga oppositifolia, Purple Saxifrage, Vetrarblóm

Saxifraga oppositifolia; the purple saxifrage is a spring flower which can be found flowering latest early June at higher altitudes but already starts blooming in early April in lowland regions. Summer visitors are not likely to notice this plant easily because the leaves are minute. They grow commonly in rocky areas where they form mats where possible but also have trailing single stems, especially along cracks in rocks. It is a member of the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Vetrarblóm.
