Low to short with a rather slender stem. Leaves 2-3, oblong, pointed, basal, but the stem with several sheathing leaves above, all unspotted. Bracts oval-lanceolate, shorter than, or equalling the ovary. Flowers brownish-purple or maroonish, with a white or pale pink, purple spotted lip, fragrant, borne in a oval spike, but lengthening with age; sepalsand petals forming a close hood; lip 4-8mm, 3 lobed, but the middle lobe large and notched at the tip; spsur half the length of the ovary, pointed downwards. Habitat: Grassy places and open scrub, on calcareous soils, often on in hilly or mountain regions, to 2100m. Flowering Season: May-June. Distribution: Europe north to S Sweden; extinct in Holland. This Picture is made during a long weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2006.
