Of all of the Amiga's classic games, few are remembered more fondly than
Gods. Steeped in the familiar themes of Greek mythology while boasting fresh, original ideas in a genre known for its lack of creativity,
Gods is considered by many to be the finest platformer ever programmed.
I do not share this sentiment.
It's not that I don't think that it's a well-made game, because it undoubtedly is. But, as with many otherwise excellent games, it's full of silly mistakes that keep it from reaching its full potential.
To begin with, the intro is fantastic (at first). It's the first thing that the player sees, and the Bitmap Brothers wanted to make a good impression with it. The music isn't really my cup of tea, and the
Chaos Engine-like percussion and "
ahhh-ahhh"-ing background chorus completely clash with the established Greek theme, but it's well-recorded, catchy, and clear-sounding. The blocky, shimmering Greek-style titles flash onto the screen in sync with the tune's rhythm, and that alone shows more polish than most contemporary games had.
That is, until the background graphics appear. The Bitmap Brothers had a penchant for keeping the Amiga versions of their games from looking any better than the ST ports - a move no doubt intended to boost the sales of the ST versions - and it rears its ugly, dithered head about 15 seconds in. There's a picture of a helmet superimposed over a stone wall, and it's rendered in about five shades of verdigris, gray, and lavender. It looks like a grayscale image with the contrast deliberately reduced in Photoshop - were it not for the copious use of highlights and shadows, nothing would be discernible at all.
After a while, it shifts to a portrait of the game's nameless hero (which looks completely different from his actual sprite). And it's bad. Not only is he rendered using the same shades of pink and gray for everything - right down to his rippling muscles being the same color as the plume on his helmet and the handle of his sword - he also completely lacks anything approaching decent proportions. His axe-wielding right hand looks more like a declawed lion's paw, his pectorals look like an extra set of abs, and his left elbow appears to bend sideways. On top of that, his helmet looks like a rejected design for a
Bionicle character.
Still, you may be thinking at this point,
all of this heckling just for some intro graphics? I concur, and I think that I should move on to the game proper.
On paper, it sounds fantastic. It has huge levels broken into four connected parts each, brimming with lever and key puzzles, teleporters, secret areas, and almost everything else that platformers do best. It has adaptive difficulty, catering to both novice players and experienced veterans without the need of a single menu. It even has a weapons shop, peddling some of the most destructive (and screen-occupying) weaponry ever seen in a platformer. It's every player's dream come true, right?
Actually, no.
The Bitmap Brothers, in their infinite wisdom, decided that their game design was so good that people would buy nothing else, leading to their being declared an illegal monopoly and fined millions of pounds. Actually, they didn't, but it's as good an explanation as any for why they crippled it the way that they did. And how did they do that?
By giving it the worst control scheme since the original
Barbarian's. The unnamed protagonist - who inexplicably wears a black leotard and sports even more grotesque musculature than his intro portrait (His
back has
boobs. Four of them!) - responds sluggishly to joystick input, walks incredibly slowly, is unable to jump more than a few feet, can only jump in a fixed diagonal arc, cannot fire while ducking, and is generally a few sizes too big for the space around him. Pitfall Harry wasn't nearly as limited, and he was a 2600 character from 1982!
So, what gives? What happened to all of those features that have been
de facto for the platform genre since the days of the NES?
Why, they've been incorporated into the puzzle interface, of course! Sure, you might
want the ability to jump vertically, but wouldn't you
rather turn to face the wall instead? Isn't it
better to give up attacking while crouched if it lets you
pick up items?
No, of course not! Why should its playability as a platform game be ruined because it has adventure elements? Look at almost any action/adventure platformer for the old Spectrum and C64 (and there are quite a few) - you don't see
them forsaking the central elements of their gameplay for the sake of enhancing the more tangential ones. Why not just pick up objects by crouching? Why not have "up" orient the player towards the wall only when there's something that can be used? However, suppose that it really was necessary to compromise some gameplay features to fit the controls onto a single joystick. Suppose that it was the only way to incorporate the added depth and complexity.
Suppose also that the single joystick was inches away from a massive panel of buttons, one which would be more than sufficient for
Gods's expanded control scheme, and which was guaranteed to be available to anybody who owned a computer, Amiga or otherwise. Yes, I'm talking about a keyboard, and it leaves the Bitmap Brothers with no excuse for their wretched, gameplay-destroying controls. Back in the day, the great
Amiga Power mourned the extent to which it was overlooked by developers, and their sentiments still ring true.
Now, this wouldn't be so bad if the designers had actually bothered to design the game around its control scheme, making allowances that would render the control scheme "unique" rather than "teeth-grindingly awful".
Flashback had some of the most idiosyncratic controls ever, but they were perfectly suited to the idiosyncratic gameplay - they'd be intolerable in any other platformer, but they added to
Flashback's character.
Gods, on the other hand, is structured like a typical arcade adventure, seemingly expecting the player to do things that just can't be done. When surrounded by fire-spitting goblins, there's really no good option for someone who can't fire while ducking - they can shoot and be burned by the flames, or duck and be mauled when the goblins walk right into them. That situation crops up frequently in
Gods, and there are many more that are just as infuriating.
Still, even if a game fails at being fun, it can still be worth playing just for the atmospheric experience, right? Well, I prefer games that have both good atmosphere
and good gameplay, but I'll take what I can get. As a game, I'd have to say that
Shadow of the Beast II is one of the worst that I've played in my life, but the beautiful, otherworldly atmosphere that permeates it keeps drawing me back, even if I never last more than two minutes.
Gods, however, doesn't have that. The graphics, while appealingly blocky and suitably stone-like, are murdered by the 16-color palette size that the Bitmap Brothers inflicted on all of their games. They reuse the same shades of brown and gray for everything, and have more dithering than the average chessboard. Some may argue that this adds "texture"; I say that it makes everything look as if it's been wrapped in chicken wire. As far as atmosphere goes,
Gods has it in spades - it just isn't actually Greek at all. If anything, the chunky stone blocks and heavy wooden doors look positively medieval. And, for all of the reverence that he gets, Mark Coleman really doesn't have a good sense of proportion. While this makes him good at pixelling grotesque beasts, it makes the hero himself look rather silly. I already covered his ridiculous back, but he's even more ludicrous when walking. Swinging his arms stiffly at his sides like a toy robot, he shuffles across the screen with a gait all his own - I certainly haven't seen actual people walk like that. The ST-quality scrolling only adds to the effect, and the screen doesn't move until he's near the edge, prompting quite a few unnecessarily close encounters with enemies.
And
Gods doesn't even have the consolation of an in-game soundtrack. While the title theme is a high-quality piece of Amiga music, the only sounds that the player actually hears in the game are those of clinky-sounding items falling, clinky-sounding weapons hitting the walls, or the grunts of the hero and monsters. Occasionally, there's a screaming harpy or short tune to shake things up, but the sounds as a whole are sparse and echoey, and only increase the slight feeling of emptiness in the absence of music.
I don't want to be too hard on
Gods, though. Even if the graphics look about as classical as a Renaissance Faire, and even though they're horribly grainy, they definitely have class. Coleman didn't get his reputation as a good graphician for nothing. And, although actually playing through them is a nightmare, the expansive, varied levels beg to be explored, and there's genuine satisfaction when the player finds a secret area - the game teases the player with items that are just out of reach, and the act of discovering how to get to them is rewarding in its own right. The weapons are also beautifully destructive, and the weapons shop adds a nice element of strategy to the gameplay. The game didn't exactly beat me over the head with its much-flaunted adaptive difficulty, but there were times when I noticed subtle adjustments to the enemy behavior. They may not save the game entirely, but the moments when
Gods's potential shines through the layers of grime covering it are simply wonderful, even if they're few and far between.
(4/10)
Reading through the comments, yeah this is overrated. Just never gelled with the gameplay at all, very clunky for a platformer. Saying its down to the character's design being a chunky guy is just making excuses for it I think, it just plays pretty poorly.
The music is great though, shame there's not more of it. And it does look kinda nice in that bitmap bros style.

I've been playing the ST version on emulation (I believe it doesn't have the issue that cracked Amiga copies have of getting impossibly hard - correct me if I'm wrong), and I'm still not keen. Is it a platformer, an arcade adventure, or a platform puzzler? I find that it falls short in all categories.
Like Xenon II it's far too slow (in both pace and motion, with the scrolling often failing to keep up with the action), and the puzzles are mainly trial-and-error experimenting, with results often impossible to predict. The control system is overambitious in how much it tries to fit into a one-button controller, making basic moves unreasonably difficult. You can't approach the jumps and enemies like you expect to in a platformer, the over-packed controls and slow movement won't let you. The main character's helmet means you can't see his face or identify with him, adding to the sterility.
There was no excuse for a lazy ST port this late either - no in-game music, lagging flick scrolling, and minimal animation are the obvious hallmarks, though the colour scheme is effective enough for the brooding feel intended.
Nice borrowed intro music, decent shop (again like Xenon II), and the adaptive AI is quite clever (no doubt paving the way for The Chaos Engine), but overhyped and mediocre overall.
Slightly better on the Megadrive though. Obviously the main character (who to me looks muscular rather than heavy-set) spent some time in the gym to prepare for that version....

Could never fault this game, absolutely incredible!! The pixels, colours, title music, SFX, skulls turning inside out.... Such perfection!!
I've heard over the years a few people complaining about the game play saying that it's a bit stiff and rigid, well when you consider that the main character is very heavy set and not exactly what you would call nimble i would say that the game play suits the character perfectly and is right on the money!!!!

Tried playing this again on weekend, I couldn't get into it back then and little has changed. No chance to explore the well drawn levels because constantly under attack.
Tried on Megadrive emulator too and not much better there, even with the Invincible code.
Shame.

Very good arcade adventure. Very involving and tough with depth to the gameplay and superb sound.
Let down a bit graphically with the jerky Atari st style scrolling (as with Magic Pockets). But I still give it 8/10

It's nice, well styled (still almost the same though), technically superb, but in compare with another pltaformers, it's slower, repetitive, a bit boring and for one player only. Overrated game

As far as style and aesthetics are concerned, Gods is a very good effort from the Bitmap Brothers, but I'm afraid that it is memorable only because of these. It looks and feel very different from contemporary platforms and has interesting mechanics that get almost completely spoiled by bad controls and game design choices like the diagonal-only jumps and too many unaivoidable deaths. However, persistence is somehow rewarding (6/10).

One of the worst Amiga platformers out there.
This isn't a puzzle platformer, it's a guessing game full of illogical puzzles that boil down to flicking switches in the right order and in a certain time frame. How anyone can call it a "thinking man's platformer" is beyond me.
On top of that you have the incredibly low fps, the very limited controls, and the balls tough difficulty, which comes from mainly unavoidable cheap deaths.
Absolutely no fun to play and typical of Bitmap Brothers releases. Lots of graphical polish and great sound but nothing else.

Above average, i would say 6/10, sure it's not 8/10. ST like scrolling, ST like colors, ST like sound BUT has lots of personality.
Surely is overrated but not complete junk. Poor quality of Amiga games shows here, so many people consider this a classic.

"Enjoy your life, it will last forever."
When I first tried it, I was disappointed by the slowness, and how it get extremely hard at level 1 world 2. I got used by the slow pace and the second point was fixed by using another version of the game (like written here, it's a copy protection).
Playability is a bit weak, but you'll get to it (that means don't bother too much when you stupidly lose a life on a ladder). I don't understand why amiga devs got stuck with one button...
The sfx are really good (I love the breathing when the hero is climbing a ladder) and the absence of music give it a certain charm, atmosphere. The graphics could have been better but it's still pretty. I wish there were animations when enemies shoot, I must admit it's quite lame. Another silly thing is moving platforms NOT moving the character, come on !
It's not so hard, you just can't run on enemies like crazy, you must be very careful. The Bitmap Brothers love to make enemies appear where you don't want. You'll have to remember where the ambush are. And also upgrades your weapons wisely. That means collect the maximum amount of treasures. There are tons of secrets in this game. Some very hard to find (well, in my opinion). Bosses aren't very challenging, except the last one who needs perfect pixel positioning and good timing. I found this game to have a very good replay value (because of the secrets and weapons store). Easily my favorite Bitmap game.

Great platform puzzler, maybe the best of all available for the Amiga. Great Bitmap Bros graphics, great sound, great playability... It was all exceedingly well made and well mixed. Spent hours on end trying to beat it and I didn't rest until I finally did. No modern game grips me like this anymore... Can't tell for sure if it's my fault for "growing up" too much or if it's the modern games that just suck... Anyway, this game rules! Gods truly is worthy as tribute to the gods.

I remember the first time I booted this game, I was (still am) a huge fan of the Bitmap Brothers so I knew this game must be something special...and boy the BB sure didn't dissapoint!
First the opening soundtrack I remember a schoolmate who didn't have a miggy heared this for the first time. He was like (with a dead serious face) put this on tape for me! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! (hahaha!)
Anyway I started the first level and my face just lit up!! .... WOOOW!!!
The only thing I didn't like, was the way the hero jumped and shoots his weapons but besides that, this was (is) pure amiga platform gaming!!
The graphics are crisp enemies are plentiful, switches galore...weapons galore...!!!
Because I wanted to savioure every single byte of this game I made sure I explored every nook and cranny and even then in my humble opninion the game was a bit easy.
This game along other amiga classics I will NEVER forget!!!
Good times man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really love the atmosphere of this game and played it for hours last night. A lot of the puzzle solving is smart for the time it was released. Graphics are wonderful, albeit a bit oppressive. I had originally played it on a Genesis emulator where it seemed to run twice as fast, sort of like what happened with Shadow of the Beast. After my go at it last night I have to say that this is the definitive version. Great game.

Oh hell, I love Gods. The metallic sounds & noises, when your weapons hit the walls, the also metallic graphics, with a nice ancient touch. The variety of the enemies, some of them really aren't dumb.
And yes, the sluggish movement of herc is somehow special. It means to me that you have to think twice before you jump or go somewhere. So no "speedrun" is possible.
That also counts for the energy, which is quickly going down if you're not careful enough.
It's a very challenging game, sometimes very hard, but combined with the atmosphere and the addictive graphics it's a great game. I have a phase at the moment where I play this a few times a day. Just cannot get enough.

What makes Gods so special is that it adjust to your playstyle - play a game and do everything wrong and extra lives/health will drop to help you. Fall into a hole you can't get up from and a teleport potion will drop etc etc. - But, if you do well, the enemies will become stronger and stronger and will evade your attacks more often. The plus side of course is that you get more points from killing them as well, so for hi-score hunters there's a lot to come back for.
I don't consider myself an epic player by any means, but I've managed to complete it only using one life...
I find that the graphics style suits the game well - the controls aren't intuitive as such, but it's easy to live with. Sounds are ace and ofc the unforgettable 'Into the Wonderful' intro music is brilliant - one of my favorite tunes ever, whether it be 'normal' or game music.

High quality gfx and sfx, technical brilliant. Good and fast response of joystick movement. Lacks a bit of a story or fast paced gameplay, but it's not a superfrog or sonic. Very good medieval fantasy theme presentation. Overall it builds up a very dense atmosphere with the stereo sfx and mentioned gfx/theme. Perfect match!
Craxx0red copies might get worse in difficulty level to unplayable.

A wasted opportunity. The graphics have an appealingly blocky style, but their 16-color palette makes them heavily dithered and full of color reuse. The sound effects and title music are clear, but the lack of an ingame soundtrack makes it feel sparse and empty. The worst failure, though, is in the gameplay. With large, sprawling levels full of clever puzzles and secret areas, seamlessly-increasing difficulty, and loads of weapons and bonuses, you'd think that Gods would be a winner. Sadly, the brutally awful controls make it impossible to enjoy the game's strengths. The nameless hero walks incredibly slowly, jumps in fixed diagonal arcs, and can't fire while ducking - the latter two aspects being due to the awkwardly-implemented puzzle interface. He can't jump vertically because "up" makes him face the wall; he can't fire while ducking because "fire" plus "down" makes him pick up and drop items. These problems could have been solved easily with extra keyboard controls, but the Bitmap Brothers, for whatever reason that they had, decided to cram everything onto the joystick. As a result, Gods is too cumbersome as an action game and too limited as an adventure.
Shame on the Bitmap Brothers for crippling what could have been a perfectly good game.

This is one of the best arcade-adventure on Amiga. Superb atmosphere and really intriguing gameplay. The graphic (even if really good) are not so important as the gameplay, the enemies are role-played (they increase their Hitpoint and Intelligence as you progress on the Game). I find this game a real experience and is one of the few game I come back in emulation to try it. Well I must say I completed it even on emulation, and it is a worthy experience. Better Than Deliverance, Better than SOTB, I think this is The Arcade Adventure. But you have to try it deeply if you want to understand it. The Game begin to take you after the first levels, and after that, you cant leave it no more...

There is one factor that no one has mentioned regarding the difficulty and I'm guessing it's because you don't know. The Bitmaps rigged it so that if you copied the game it would play OK for a while and then the difficulty would increase exponentially towards the end of the first world. On top of that, if you managed to reach the end of world boss on this setting you find that he can't be killed. I would urge all those who played this version to try the proper version which has a much more reasonable difficuly curve. It really is a good game. Also, emulators don't always translate the scrolling and speed faithfully. If you get the chance, play it on an actual Amiga.

As much as I loved other Bitmap Brothers games like Speedball 2 and Chaos Engine, I felt this was one of the most overrated games on Amiga. Sure it looks nice in screenshots. But the animation and control of the character is stiff and awkward, the level design is below par and the gameplay is distinctly average. Thought the music was pretty crap too, to be honest.

I dunno what it was with this game, though I couldn't get very far in it, it always brought me back to playing it. It had nice well designed GFX, good sound and a cracking soundtrack, same people who brought music to Speedball 2. I still think this game was a masterpiece at the time it came out

Another grey-and-orange classic from the Bitmaps. I LOVED this game. With some help with walkthrus published in magazines, it was a VERY FUN game which was possible to complete. The puzzles, graphics and baddies were great!!

Great graphics, although I never got anywhere with this game; too hard....And where did all those daggers come from?

Delivers the usual goods expected from a Bitmap Bros. Game when it comes to presentation, although the scrolling could have been smoother. Lots of great ideas, but something crucial from the gameplay is missing (although most seem to like this game a lot). British level design just couldn't compare with Japanese back then.

One of the best games on the Amiga, if not the best game that ever graced this computer - a masterpiece on two disks. "Into the Wonderful" says it all. Gorgeous graphics, beautiful sounds, immersive atmosphere, all bundled with gameplay that is nothing short of perfect. I have so many fond memories of playing so many Amiga games in my past, but my memories of playing Gods rises above them all. A game that is simply beautiful, the largest jewel in the Bitmap's crown.

Typical Bitmap Bros Amiga game: excellent graphics and music, but gameplay that doesn't really live up to it.

MartinUK - I think that tic-tac-toe is a perfect game for you. So take a pencil and a squared paper and don ´t waste your time in front of Amiga, until you won´t understand one of the best games ever - GODS!

Dont listen to the negative comments, they are WRONG! Gods is the thinking mans platform shooter. If you want a speedy mario/sonic style platformer then look elsewhere, but if you want a more cerebral platformer with bags of style and playability to get your teeth into, get 'into the wonderful'

Most people seem to either love or hate this game. Well I'm one of the few that's stuck in the middle. Graphics and Sound are fantastic, but the gameplay just misses the mark. If the game was a little bit faster and a hell of alot easier, it would be up there with the best.

I really didn't understand all the hype surrounding this game back when it was released. To be honest, it's more or less crap. Actually it feels like a poor ST port.

Very difficult?!! I can pass thru without losing a life! One of the best games ever, and first i have seen on amiga (together with turrican 2). Graphics is a masterpiece, sound effects are great and playability is superb! A great variety of enemies, huge amount of puzzles and secret passages and great weapon arsenal make this game really joy to play.
