Large shrub or small tree, 3-8 (13) m tall, 3-5 m wide, short, crooked stem, round crown; branches upright, twigs extended to rising; fast-growing, 40-60 cm a year

Before leaves shoot, attractive catkins, initially silvery, then yellow, March to April (May); honey scented

Round to broadly elliptical, pale green, grey-tomentose underneath, with clearly visible stipules; without autumn colours or yellow to orange-brown, November

Mostly shallow, tolerating covering, sensitive to floods (an exception!)
Demands
Sun to light shade; likes warmth, somewhat sensitive to late frost, but frost hardy; wind resistant

Moderately dry to damp; not demanding; any somewhat heavy substrates, losing its foliage early on light soil; avoids high chalk content; somewhat tolerant of salt
Tips
Increasingly brittle after  ca. 20-30 years; cutting is possible as it regenerates well.
