Selena Gomez is opening up about her split from Justin Bieber back in 2018, revealing that the end of the relationship pushed her to focus on her mental health.
The 31-year-old has revealed that the heartbreak spurred her to take a break from social media.
"I had just gotten my heart broken," Gomez said, speaking to Fast Company.
"I didn't need to see what everyone was doing.
"Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I'd see on Instagram."
Gomez's split from Bieber came after years of an on-and-off relationship. It's around this time that the 'Only Murders in the Building' star was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Selena Gomez takes positives from her Justin Bieber break-up
In her 2022 Apple+ documentary 'Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me', she surprised many by stating that her break-up from Bieber was the best thing that ever happened to her.
"Everything was so public, I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of and then I just moved past it, and I wasn't afraid anymore," she said.
"I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of a hand, it was really confusing.
"But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me."
Selena Gomez enjoys single life
Soon after the split, Bieber began dating Hailey Baldwin, with the two getting married by the end of the year.
As for Gomez, she dated The Weeknd for 10 months in 2017. She was also linked with Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers, though reports say it wasn't a serious relationship.
Since then, Gomez has poked fun at her relationship status by making it clear she is single.
