Lesser Pond-sedge - Carex acutiformis

Has creeping rhizomes and shoots in tufts. Stems 60 to 150 cm tall, sharply three angled. Leaves narrow (less than 10 mm) and glaucous, drooping at tips. Inflorescence of 2 to 3 male spikelets above 3 to 4 female, close set. Male spikelets 1 to 4 cm, bluntish purple-brown. Female 2 to 5 cm, cylindrical, erect and all short stalked.

Carex riparia and other aquatic species

Marshes, wet meadows, riversides and wet ditches.

July to September.

Perennial.

Common and widespread in Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 122 of the 617 tetrads.
