Jude Law has given an update on the mooted third Sherlock Holmes movie from director Guy Ritchie.
Law and Robert Downey Jr teamed up to play Watson and Holmes in Ritchie’s 2009 film based on the famous sleuth created by Arthur Conan Doyle. Two years later, they reprised their roles for a sequel called Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, which was also directed by Madonna’s ex.
Both films were big hits at the box office, grossing over $1 billion (£615 million) between them, and in October 2011 Warner Bros hired Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce to pen a third Sherlock Holmes adventure. However, progress since then has been slow and the project seems to have stalled.
In a new interview with Digital Spy, Law revealed that Warner Bros has yet to give Sherlock Holmes 3 an official green light, but confirmed the film is still in the works as far as he, Downey Jr and Ritchie are concerned. “We had a meeting earlier this year, the three of us, and I think it’s being written now,” Law said. “Warner Bros have still got to agree to pay for it… I think they want to!”
Law also spoke positively about Sherlock Holmes 3 in September, telling Empire: “We want it to be better than the other two. We want to make sure it’s smarter and cleverer, but in the same realm.”
Meanwhile, Law will soon be seen as a boozy bloated gangster in British crime flick Dom Hemingway, which opens in cinemas on November 15. Watch the trailer here.
