Summerville remains the top-ranked 5A wrestling team in the state in the new South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association rankings.
The association, in partnership with scmat.com, released its newest rankings for all five high school league classifications Dec. 21. While the top team is unchanged, there was plenty of change in the 5A ranks.
Following Summerville in the Top 10 are Chapin, River Bluff, Fort Mill, Goose Creek, Dorman, TL Hanna, Carolina Forest, Stratford and Blythewood. Goose Creek jumped four spots from the preseason rankings while Stratford also moved up. In fact, the Knights jumped eight spots, from No. 17 to No. 9.
Fort Dorchester dropped from No. 7 to No. 18 and Cane Bay fell from No. 3 to No. 19. Ashley Ridge, which was ranked 16th in the preseason rankings, dropped out altogether.
The association also updated its list of the Top 8 wrestlers for each weight class. Fort Dorchester’s Richard Springs is the top-ranked 5A wrestler in the 120-pound class. Cane Bay’s J.J. Peace is No. 1 at 126. Summerville’s Caleb Herring is No. 1 at 144.
Other Cane Bay wrestlers who are ranked are Drew McDonnell (eighth at 132), Tyson Schirmer (fourth at 138), Jared Tyson (fourth at 157), Colin Mueller (fourth at 165) and Will Coker (seventh at 215).
Other Fort Dorchester wrestlers who are ranked include Evan Gates (second at 106), Zach Gomer-Chrobocinski (third at 113) and Nathan Gates (fifth at 132).
Other Summerville wrestlers who are ranked include Devin Garza (fifth at 106), Landon Deaton (fifth at 113), Luke Bullard (fifth at 120), Xavier Anderson (second at 126), Hassan Williams (second at 150), Jonas Haynes (third at 157) and Angel Lopez (fifth at 285).
Ashley Ridge grappler Emory Dalton is ranked fourth at 120.
The rankings are scheduled to be updated Jan. 10.
