Tábor – a tale of medieval communism

The South Bohemian town of Tábor is one of the most scenic towns in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1420 by the Hussites, who named it after the Biblical mountain of Thabor near Nazareth. The Hussites were followers of the teachings of Czech preacher and reformer Master Jan Hus, and were named after him. The town was the Hussites’ home base and as such has a fascinating and turbulent history. It was like a country within a country, a city state where human laws did not apply, subordinated to God’s Law. It was founded on ideas of equality and Christian communism i.e. that all property was held in common and split among community members according to their needs. The city had its own army, made up of poor people without military training, yet able to defeat professional armies. A sophisticated system of fortifications was also built here, some of it preserved to this day.
