A large, spreading herby shrub with soft, furry foliage and cherry-sized, orange fruits in a dry papery husk. The fruits are edible and sweet and can be consumed raw or made into jams, jellies or the like. Physalis peruviana is native to the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia between 1400 and 3600 m but also widely cultivated in warm temperate climates for its fruits. It also makes a reasonably attractive ornamental.
