He was born in Reims, France to a Portuguese father and Spanish mother.
Pires inherited his passion for football from his father.
When he was 15 he left school and began studying a two-year sports degree course in Reim.
Pires made his senior debut for FC Metz against Lyon in 1993.

In France, Pires played for Marseille and Provence before moving to UK team Arsenal.
Pires won the Premier League title twice with the team and was heavily involved in the 2004 "Invincibles" title win where Arsenal did not lose a game all season, winning eight league matches in a row between January and March 2004.
