Why Amelanchier is the perfect shrub for small gardens

From spring blossom to striking autumn foliage, these plants are glorious all year round

Their compact size and many seasons of interest make amelanchier a favourite of garden designers. There is something to admire about them at almost every point in the year — light clouds of early-spring blossom, summer clusters of deep currant-like fruits and striking autumn foliage. With many different forms, many of them under 5m, there is a variety to suit almost every situation.

White starry flowers appear in late spring, alongside the bronzed beginnings of emerging leaves. As the frothy white blossom finishes, the leaves take over the show, revealing coppery tones. Amelanchier produce notably more intense autumn colour when planted in acidic soil, but they are tolerant of a wide range of growing situations. They fruit and flower best in full sun, but are
