Delicate nodding blue flowers with dainty fringed petals rise above rounded, glossy evergreen leaves. Commonly known as the Snowbell, the spring flowers of this hardy perennial make a fascinating feature that will certainly demand closer inspection. Soldanella montana is an unusual little plant for a shady spot, that makes an interesting addition to rockeries, and alpine troughs. Height and spread: 20cm (8").

Grow Snowbell plants in rich, moist, well drained soil. On heavier soils, incorporate plenty of grit to improve drainage prior to planting. Soldanella montana prefers a position in dappled shade, as the foliage tends to scorch if planted in full sun.

Top dress around the collar of the plant with sharp grit in early autumn to protect the crown from wet winter weather. In particularly wet areas, a cloche may help to prevent the crown from rotting. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Snowbell plants in spring to maintain their vigour.
