Ailanthus altissima 'Sangiovese' Ailanthus altissima 'Sangiovese'

Simaroubaceae

Ailanthus altissima 'Sangiovese' Ailanthus altissima 'Sangiovese'

Large tree, up to about 20 m. Crown initially vase-shaped, later virtually round. Grows vigorously, especially when young. On the naturally imparipinnate leaf, the end lobe is often absent. The leaves are a deep, purplish red on emerging. Later in summer, they turn dark purplish green to dark green, but the young leaves retain their deep colour. The tree can survive even in the poorest and driest places, although such circumstances will inhibit growth. As well as drought, Ailanthus can tolerate air pollution.
