Mespilus germanica Common wild medlar

Rosaceae

Mespilus germanica Common wild medlar

This slow growing tree is a native of parts of South Europe and West Asia. The heavy main branches form a capriciously shaped crown when maturing. Mature specimen are often wider than they are high. Young twigs are grey and woolly-haired. A mature trunk is smooth and light grey. The lanceolate to obovoid leaf is very finely toothed and softly haired. In autumn it turns from red brown to golden orange. The brown, hard fruits have large calyx valves. The fruits are only edible when over-ripe, often after the first night frost. There are various cultivars that have been selected for the size of their fruits. Deep rooting. Tolerates calcareous soils and has a good hardiness and is very heat resistant.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2024.
