Native to the Mediterranean area. Grows on cultivated, fallow or waste ground.

Flowers

The flowers consist of yellow-orange ray florets with yellow-brown-purple disk florets. The flowers are 4 x smaller than those of the robust, cultivated Marigold.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, pointed, margins finely serrated.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small, dry, one-seeded fruit that does not open to release seeds, strongly curved inwards.

Edible

Buds: pickled in vinegar.

Medical

Flowers: Calendula species have a healing, soothing effect on irritated skin, stomach and intestines.
