Description
The name ‘campanula’ comes from the Latin word ‘campana’, meaning bell. The Rampion Bellflower is common in our area. Tall, slender, upright, with a slightly hairy stem.
Dry, grassy, sunny areas.
Flowers
The flower spike (14 cm) holds many white, pale blue or lilac funnel-shaped flowers with lilac stamens. The sepals have 5 pronounced teeth.
Leaves
Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem, Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Basal rosette: broad end of the leaves tapers at base, with stalks.
Upper leaves: long and narrow, without stalks, pointed with alternate hairy leaves.
Fruits Seeds
Capsule: inverted cone, releases the seeds.
Edible
Leaves and roots: Used to be cultivated in Europe for the leaves – a little like spinach; also for the roots – a little like radish.
