Description

A vivid purplish-blue woodland plant. The name hepatica comes from the word ‘hepar’ meaning liver in Greek, referring to the liver colour of the underside of the leaves.

In former times it was thought that the shape or colour of a plant indicated which part of the body it could be used for, this was called ‘The Doctrine of Signatures’. Hepatica nobilis was used to treat liver complaints.

The appearance of a group of these bright blue flowers emerging from the woodland undergrowth in early spring, can surprise and delight.

Cordate heart-shaped, Lobed leaf shaped with indents and protrusions. Heart-shaped at base with 3 lobes, fleshy.
