Description

A rhizomatous perennial. It grows at the water’s edge of rivers, marshes and ponds. Although essentially a water plant it tolerates long periods of drought. Can be invasive.

It has been used in water purification treatments as it absorbs heavy metals through its roots.

Flowers

Flowers (5 to 10) are bright yellow, 7-10 cm long, with brown markings on the oval blades of the falls; the standard is much shorter than the falls, 2-3 cm.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Sword-like, pointed, greyish-green, 1-3 cm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Pod with numerous pale brown seeds, 4-7 cm.

Medical

Roots: once used as an emetic.
