Trampling of livestock leads to compacted soil that favours Plantago major.

Flowers

The flowers on cylindrical spikes are numerous, yellowish-green with lilac anthersupper fertile part of the stamen containing the pollen, becoming yellow with age.

Leaves

Ovate leaf is egg-shaped, wider at base. Basal rosette, egg-shaped, broad, pointed on long stalks, undulated margins, 7 pronounced veins, 5-20 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: containing numerous small, oval seeds.

Medical

Leaves: traditionally to treat wounds, ulcers, bites or diarrhoea. It destroys a wide range of micro-organisms and stimulates the healing process. Seeds: for constipation.
